Analyis of the race

This looked an open affair but it was barely a notch above the sort of field you would expect to see in a seller. The conditional riders and amateurs were obviously not supposed to use their whips, so one would imagine that this is not a race to go overboard about, although it did provide plenty of entertainment in the last 100 yards.

WISE MEN SAY, who was last seen pulling up on his chasing debut over 3m2f, could be given a chance on his bumper win over the useful Psychomodo a long time ago, but there was nothing in recent efforts to suggest he was about to win, even in this race.

Given an ‘agricultural' ride by his amateur jockey up the home straight, he got on top after the last and was edging clear before Mr Knott decided to wave to the crowd just over 100 yards out, something that punters who were on him probably could have done without seeing.

Luckily for the jockey, who had not looked behind him, nothing was catching him quickly enough and he won with a bit in hand. However, it did not go unnoticed that he was giving his mount some reminders down the shoulder late on, for which he received a 7-day ban. That said, it was a momentous day in the life of the rider (it was his first winner after 28 years of trying) and it was great to see such pleasure taken in winning a race.

Global Strategy, off since a poor effort in cheekpieces, was given a good ride by his jockey and certainly gave some encouragement for the future.

Graham's Girl had shown almost nothing in all of her previous efforts, including a run where she refused at a hurdle. But here she stayed on fairly well under pressure.

Sweet World folded really quickly after looking a likely winner rounding the home bend.

Days Of Pleasure was under strong pressure leaving the back straight. He has now been beaten a long way on every start over hurdles, which is not a massive surprise for a 7f winner on the Flat.
