Master Cobbler pulled very hard in mid-division until 7th, soon weakened, tailed off and pulled up before 2 out
DEFINITY, a son of 1993 Irish National winner Ebony Jane, represented a stable that had a formidable record in this race (six wins and two places from 11 previous runners in the past ten years), so obviously demanded plenty of respect. The winner of an Irish point in May, in which the next three home all won on their next start, he was always well positioned and came home a workmanlike winner rather than an impressive one. No doubt he will improve and get better with time, but connections have no solid plans for him.
Orion D'Oudairies got bogged down in some very soft ground last time at Aintree but had previously won at Uttoxeter. Rated 121, he looks really hard work. Although closing in the end, he never looked like winning.
Might As Well was not disgraced on his hurdling debut in an amateur riders' race at Exeter last month but never looked like winning in this. He did, however, stay on really well and shapes like a thorough stayer.
One cannot help thinking that Richard Johnson would have been wiser making more use of One Cool Knight, the winner of an Irish point, who was predictably outpaced up the home straight. Regarded as a stayer, apparently he came in quite late to the stable, so maybe he needed it much more than others.
