Stagecoach Opal, yet to win over fences though placed several times, was racing for the first time since June. Given a patient ride, he moved into a challenging position starting up the home straight and had every chance, but he tended to put his head to one side when asked for maximum effort and although he wasn't beaten far at the line he wasn't altogether convincing.
Matcho Pierji, having only his second start over fences, had cheekpieces on for the first time and, although he came through to hold every chance over the last three fences, he was never quite doing enough. This was his first start since winning over hurdles at Wetherby in February though, so he is entitled to come on for it.
Extra Smooth, who ran better than his finishing position might suggest on his return from over two years off at Carlisle earlier this month, was still in with a chance when making a terrible mess of the ditch six from home and that must have eventually taken its toll.
Ballyvoge made much of the running before dropping out very tamely, but although he never got into the race and was eventually pulled up there was some hope in the performance of Glacial Delight, especially as he had been absent for over two years and has shown all his best form on faster ground.
Ballyvoge was reported to have lost his action.
