WILL BE DONE had finished ten lengths behind Nine De Sivola at Carlisle earlier this month when he held the advantage of a recent run, but on this flatter track over a shorter trip hemanaged to turn the form around completely. The key to this victory was that he was able to dominate from the start and was therefore able to set a pace that meant he was able to keep enough in reserve for the latter stages. He duly kept on finding what was required and even a serious blunder at the last wasn't enough to stop him. He had everything fall right for him here, but he should still be able to build on this.
Nine De Sivola, runner-up in the Irish and Scottish Nationals as well as the Eider in 2007, was still looking for his first win over fences and this looked a golden opportunity, but there was always the danger that he would find this trip on a quick track in a small field too sharp, even in these conditions. Held up for much of the way, he had every chance over the last three fences, but he could never quite summon the pace to get on terms with the winner and couldn't even capitalise on his rival's last-fence error. He will win a race over fences at some point, but it's becoming an expensive business following him to do so.
Bay Cherry, a dual Irish point-to-point winner at the start of this year and picked up for £60,000 by current connections, didn't jump at all well on this debut over regulation fences and a serious blunder five from home finished him off. It looks a case of back to the drawing board with him.
Feeling Peckish was predictably outclassed.
